Char and her husband Rick own Happy Tails Alpacas in China Grove, North Carolina. She began her alpaca adventure in 2008 while living in Ohio and moved their farm to North Carolina in 2012. As she has a heart for teaching, she became a 4-H leader in Ohio and invested hours in teaching students proper alpaca husbandry and agility training. Char has always been an active worker in the alpaca community by serving on affiliate education committees, writing humorous articles for publication, volunteering at numerous shows and at JTC full emersion training clinics. She recently obtained a USDA exhibition license to begin her newest adventure, AlpacaGrams.
She has served on the board of the Carolina Alpaca Breeders and Owners as secretary and then president. Being a crafter since childhood, she has taken her alpaca fiber from pasture to product through dying, spinning and weaving and then selling the products in her farm store called CJ’s Barntique.
She purchased Fleeces-To-Go in 2017 to provide skirting services as a way to encourage breeders to participate in fleece shows. Her small farm of 22 alpacas has won over 30 championships including AOA National Fleece Championships and awards for best prepared fleece.
