After raising alpacas and running a successful business for 12 years, Julie Roy looked back and discovered that her knowledge of alpaca fiber took off once she started entering fleece shows, spin-offs, and analyzing the results! What an incredibly fun and valuable way to gain objective feedback about the quality of her alpaca herd. Once she accumulated several years of results, she made quality breeding decisions backed by the additional data. She used the hand-spun skeins from the spin-offs to assist her in assessing values for individual alpacas.
As she transitioned from alpaca owner to alpaca mentor, she set some of her sales prices higher because she could show the actual results of yarn made from the alpacas’ fiber. At least half-a-dozen sales were over $1,000 higher than an equal alpaca without spin-off results. She really started to grow as a fiber artist once she started using the hand-spun skeins of yarn in her weavings. Now she wants to pass on her knowledge to other breeders who are interested in getting the greatest benefit from entering fleece and spin-off shows.
Julie is the author of several alpaca fiber articles and newsletters about successful alpaca business secrets. She recently launched her e-book called Alpacas Made Simple which covers topics about Herd Health, Fiber, Marketing, and other business topics. She and her husband live in southern California and mentor/coach several new alpaca breeders who just purchased their former herd. She can be reached at email@example.com and her website www.AlpacasNextDoor.com has numerous educational links for the new and experienced alpaca breeder.
