The 2017 calculation of EPDs has been completed and is now available online. Trait data that was submitted prior to October has been included in this calculation. This year’s analysis included observations for at least one trait on 29,955 Huacaya and 7,035 Suri animals. This translates to 65,517 huacayas and 14,583 suris for a total of 80,100 alpacas with EPDs.
EPDs set AOA registered alpacas apart from others around the world, providing information that helps AOA members make breeding and buying decisions that support rapid and effective genetic gain. The advancements in fiber then help to promote the fiber market.
EPD Percentile Rank
New this year, percentile ranks are now calculated and displayed on the alpaca's EPD chart. Ranks are broken down by breed and gender. The percentile rank is calculated by dividing the trait rank by the total number of animals in the group. Special emphasis is given to traits that rank in the top 1%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 25%. Also, new this year is the new percentile search option in the EPD search. This allows you to quickly search and sort a trait by rank.
Group Totals for Ranking
- Huacaya Female (42,558)
- Huacaya Male (22,959)
- Suri Female (9,408)
- Suri Male (5,175)
Remember that alpacas that have had no trait data submitted, but are related to alpacas with data, may have EPDs recorded. EPDs are calculated up to four generations back from an alpaca with submitted data.
