Membership Monday with Ouroboros Farmstead

At Ouroboros Farmstead, where ancient symbolism meets modern sustainability, alpacas play a central role in the dedication of creating closed-loop systems that mirror the resilience of nature.

Ouroboros (u•ro•bo•ros) is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail, representing cyclicality, infinity, and unity of opposites. The symbolic connection of permaculture and ouroboros is the idea of closed-loop systems. Permaculture seeks to create self-sustaining ecosystems that mimic the diversity and resilience of natural ecosystems while minimizing waste and maximizing the use of resources. The integration of alpaca husbandry into a permaculture system offers several benefits, including efficient grazing, high-quality fiber production, nutrient cycling, and animal welfare. By working together, alpaca husbandry and permaculture can help promote sustainable and regenerative farming systems that benefit both the environment and the people who depend on it — us!

The Lunsmann’s found their way into the world of alpacas when they moved into a new house with a five-acre property in Oregon. They knew they wanted livestock of some kind, and alpacas fit right in place with the promise of regenerative agriculture and permaculture. After visiting Wings and a Prayer Alpaca Farm to learn more about alpacas, it solidified their decision to begin their journey.

The arrival of Zeus, Oroboros Farmstead’s first cria, marked a memorable milestone in their alpaca journey. Since then, Zeus has not only brought joy but has also earned himself a color champion title. Along with alpacas, they are home to chickens, ducks, rabbits, and honeybees.

As a proud member of Alpaca Owners Association and its affiliates, the value lies in the connections, education, and resources within the community. For those considering embarking on their own alpaca journey, Oroboros Farmstead advises to find a mentor and vet before taking the leap. If you are in search of a mentor farm, you can locate farms near you on our farm and ranch locator.
